Slack Usage Guide
Contents
General Overview
Slack is our primary communication tool. Always keep your status updated, and use it responsibly for work-related conversations and collaborations.
Self-Channel
Utilize your personal channel for note-taking, reminders, and drafting messages before sending them in official channels.
Addressing People
Mention team members with @username for specific communication, and use @here or @channel only when necessary to avoid spamming.
Best Practices
Follow Slack etiquette: be concise, use threads for follow-ups, and ensure clarity in communication to maintain an efficient workflow.
Useful Tools
Take advantage of Slack’s integration features, such as reminders, polls, and scheduled messages, to enhance productivity.
Channels
Join relevant channels, keep discussions on-topic, and create new channels only when necessary to maintain organized communication.
Setting Up Zoom for Video Calls
At rtCamp, Zoom is our go-to platform for both internal and external meetings. All formal meetings are conducted via Zoom, so it’s essential to get your setup right.
Your Zoom ID
Ideally, your Zoom ID should be your rtCamp email address, like [email protected]. You’ll receive an invite to join the rtCamp Zoom team.
To ensure smooth communication and consistency, please follow these important steps:
Use the Latest Version
Always keep your Zoom client on both your phone and desktop up to date. You can download the latest version for your system [here].
Zoom Setup and Etiquette
Zoom enables us to collaborate from our homes, and we recognize that. It’s important to be empathetic and non-judgmental about how people may appear on calls.
- Profile Name: Make sure your Zoom profile shows at least your first name. Avoid using nicknames or handles that might confuse your colleagues.
- Camera Usage: While keeping your video on enhances communication, it’s not mandatory. Don’t pressure others to turn on their cameras.
- Background Noise Suppression: Enable Zoom’s noise suppression feature and set it to “High” if you expect background noise during calls.
- Mute When Not Speaking: Always mute yourself to prevent unintended noise from disrupting the conversation.
- Zoom Reactions: Use the “Raise Hand” feature to signal when you’d like to contribute without interrupting the discussion.
Zoom Call Backgrounds
It’s perfectly fine not to use a Zoom background. We understand that family members or kids might appear in the background—it’s part of working from home, and we embrace that.
However, if you choose to use a virtual background, feel free to get creative! Just make sure it’s appropriate for work and not too bright or distracting for others on the call.
